Too Hot For Tanning? NEVER

There was an intense heat wave over us today… it got to 100*F (and that’s WITHOUT the intense humidity)! But did that stop me from getting in a healthy dosage of Vitamin D? I think not! I’m a creature of the sun, my friends, and that’s never gonna change.
Now, I know that sitting out in such intense heat can be extremely irresponsible and risky. That being said, I have learned to take some major precautions when stepping out in this weather.
- HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE! As of this evening, I drank 40 ounces (and still chugging) of electrolyte-filled Smartwater, besides all the other beverages I’ve consumed throughout the day.
- Don’t stay out in the sun for extended periods of time! I went out for intervals of about 25 minutes and then took a break to cool down in our A/C house. Heatstroke is common in such hot, humid weather, so you never want to overdo your heat-quota.
- Take it easy when exercising and go during the coolest times of the day. I went for a 2.5 mile walk early this morning before the intensity of the afternoon heat came upon us. I also didn’t do any running, knowing that it wouldn’t be safe to exert myself with the scorching humidity.
- LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! When I was out on the lounger this afternoon, I could tell the MOMENT that I was getting too hot. I immediately went inside and filled up my body with ice cold Smartwater and read a few chapters from the comfort of my living room couch.
I truly believe that major part of respecting our bodies is treating it well and listening to its warnings. Trust your body – it knows what it’s doing. When I was in the midst of my ED, I tended to ignore all the signals my body was giving me. I’d go for 3 mile bike rides in this kind of weather, and then turn around without a break and tan for 2 HOURS straight. I just didn’t really care what my body said as long as I was in control. Looking back, I can’t believe I ever treated my body with such disrespect! Honor your body, its beauty, its intelligence, and its power. You’d be amazed at everything it’s telling you!
Food
Last night, I had a bit of an adventure with my snack. I started out with a Vanilla Oikos Greek Yogurt, an organic gala apple, and some Dr. Kracker Seeded Spelt Snackers.
However, as soon as that first spoonful of yogurt hit my tongue, I just about threw up! WOW, that baby was SPOILED ROTTEN! It was old that it actually tasted carbonated. Seriously, it tingled on my tongue. Oddly enough, it was dated for June 27th! I immediately threw that thing in the trash and replaced it with a much more delicious (and unspoiled) Stonyfield fat free yogurt.
We turned on the A/C last night since the humidity was already starting to settle in. Although I normally don’t like to turn that thing on, it is nice when the hottest days of the summer hit.
I woke up this morning completely oblivious to the outside heat and started my day with a bowl of Nature’s Path Pumpkin Raison Flax Cereal topped with organic skim milk and a white flesh peach on the side. I’m not much of a fan of this cereal, but for some reason I was craving it this morning!
After breakfast, I ran into town to stock up on a few essentials and mail out a few packages. I first stepped outside in a big sweatshirt and just about died from the humid heat. I threw that thing off and sported a strappy top with short shorts. Flaunt that beautiful body ladies!
As soon as I got back home, I went for a 2.5 mile walk for a little exercise. It was hot, but watched my body for any signs of distress and made sure to hydrate with H20 before and after walking.
When lunch rolled around, I was craving another dipping platter! On today’s plate:
- organic carrot sticks
- purple cauliflower
- organic sliced cucumbers
- Kashi Honey Sesame crackers
- Athenos Cucumber Dill hummus
On the side, I had a vanilla activia light and a glass of vanilla light soymilk.
I spent a while in the sun in the afternoon, taking a few breaks in between, and getting some more work done on my summer homework. On a side-note, this homework I’m doing is actually due on July 16th. The teacher is making us turn it into our High School Office by that day or we will “no longer be welcome in her class.” Yeah, a little extreme if you ask me, but I guess that’s life!
Mid-afternoon, I went inside and did 30 minutes of pilates for some strength and core work.
I then refueled with a delicious snack! I took ~1 cup of Stonyfield fat free plain yogurt and added in 1/2 of an organic banana and 1 tbsp of Chocolate PB2. To be honest, I like regular PB2 quite a bit better, but this stuff definitely does the trick as well!
Mixed together with a side of an organic plum, a whole wheat honey graham cracker (dipping!), and a sparkling iced green tea.
Dinner this evening was Sloppy Joes using lean deer venison ground hamburger for the meat. In case anyone new didn’t know, my dad’s side of the family is HUGE into deer hunting, so we end up using deer for the meat in a lot of recipes. I don’t mind at all – I know the deer was wild and killed humanely, plus deer meat is healthy and low in saturated fat! I had my Sloppy Joe on a whole wheat bun and topped with ketchup, mustard, and a few pickles. On the side, I had a large helping of steamed veggies and a glass of organic skim milk.
Now that it’s cooled down a bit outside, I think I’m going to go for a short bike ride before it gets dark, then spend the rest of my evening relaxing in the comfort of the A/C!
Happy Tuesday Everyone!
Heather

I love deer meat. In singapore, one of my fav dishes was deer meat served on a sizzling hot plate. DELISH!
I’m not much of a tanning fan. I tan really easily, and dislike my dark skin! Yeah, the grass is always greener on the other side!

You’re so lucky it’s that hot where you are. Here in Vancouver, it is chilly and rainy
It actually still gets quite cold at night. We only have about a month and a half of nice, hot summer weather, then that’s it. back to rain, ha ha. I don’t believe I have seen that smart water here in Vancouver? I see you eat Venison..I was wondering what it tastes like? Is it gamey at all?

Yay for tanning days! The weather is sooo hot here too. It’s keeping me inside way too much.

PB2 is such a good alternative when you want the pb taste without so many cals.

If my shipment order is right, you shall be receiving 8 delicious bottles of Coffee Frappuccino’s on your doorstep today
Also, my mom packed them and shipped them for me, and she said she put packing peanuts EVERYWHERE, so if for some reason any of them are broken, its because UPS is BRUTAL!

Christina-
Venison tastes similar to beef, but is much leaner and has a much better texture. It’s one of the few meats that I actually don’t mind eating!
