When The Weather Fights Back

Today had to be THE scariest driving experience of my life.  Coming from Wisconsin (aka the land of black ice, drifts, and snowstorms) and having driven in just about every form of storm possible, that’s saying a lot.

I set out at 7:30am this morning to drive 2.5 hours to my podiatrist for an annual check-up.  For those of you who don’t know, I’ve had bunion surgery on 4 toes, and corrective surgery on 4 toes six months later.  I was honestly excited to see my podiatrist since it had been a year since I checked in with him – love that guy! Everything went well at the check-up, but about 20 minutes into my 2.5-hour drive back to Madison, I hit the worst rainstorm I have ever been in in my life.

The visibility was about 3 feet around my car… I couldn’t even SEE signs, let alone read them.  I had to find my exits by reading the mile markers on the side of the road and stayed in my lane by looking at the road lines.  I drove past 4 cars in the ditch and 2 accidents.  I knew it wouldn’t be safe to pull over and I just wanted to get home as soon as I could, so I kept driving.  I was pretty close to tears after 2 hours of this, and wasn’t sure whether I should laugh at how insane this was or cry at the stress and scariness of the situation.  Luckily I made it back safe and sound, but not without a MAJOR migraine.  DEFINITELY don’t want to have to drive through anything like that ever again!

Have you ever driven through intense weather and feared for your safety?

In other, less dramatic news, I finally had time yesterday to stock up at Whole Foods.  My fridge was looking pretty sad since I haven’t had extra time to go shopping lately, so I needed to get loaded on the goods.

I tried out the Allegro Breakfast Blend Coffee this morning to take with me on my drive and it was INCREDIBLE!  I actually might save some money the next couple of weeks and bypass my usual morning trip to Starbucks. Winking smile

I still have a lot of studying to do yet tonight, so I’m going to get right to it!  At least the less than stellar weather today makes it easier to concentrate on my work… only 3 more days left! Smile

It’s The Little Things

Thank you guys so much for your good luck wishes on my upcoming finals!  My schedule is still as crazy as ever, but I’m doing my best to stay on top of it and keep on track.  Luckily, my exams are all spread out pretty well, so starting next week everything should slowly start to settle down.  I have a lot to look forward to coming up this summer, so it’s keeping me motivated!

I had to forego a Whole Foods trip this week for lack of any extra time, so yesterday I ended up stopping at a nearby grocery store after one of my classes and picked up some goods:

IMG_5061

  • Organic spinach
  • Organic green beans
  • Organic bananas
  • Activia light
  • Organic bananas
  • Fage 0% Greek yogurt
  • Food for Life Brown Rice Tortillas
  • Smartwater

IMG_5062

  • Synergy and Organic Raw Kombucha
  • Organic carrots
  • Organic mangos
  • Organic kiwis

It’s the little things that perk up my stressful studying days… like grocery shopping. Winking smile

This morning I started out my day with a bowl of Nature’s Path Optimum Blueberry Cinnamon cereal topped with unsweetened almond milk, and an organic banana on the side.

Of course, I trip to Starbucks was quickly in the works.  It’s slightly pathetic that the baristas at Starbucks rung me up and had my drink ready BEFORE I ordered today.  It certainly does make for fast service though, so I’m not complaining! Winking smile

I have a busy morning ahead, and study schedule to stay on top of for today.  This afternoon I have a presentation in my Geology class on the landfill project I mentioned a few days ago, but it’s the last Discussion for that class FOREVERwoohoo!!!

Have a fabulous Wednesday everyone!

Unplanned

This morning was completely uncharacteristic of me.

It started out normal – I got out of bed at 5:45am and went right to the kitchen to have breakfast…

Kashi 7 Whole Grain Puffs topped with organic raw pumpkin seeds, unsweetened almond milk, and cinnamon, and an organic banana on the side.

Pre-cinnamon:

Yes, I like to pile on my cinnamon. 😉

After breakfast, I started thinking about getting my day started, but then I realized how tired I was, and all I wanted to do was crawl back in bed. Being a Saturday, a figured what the heck? and crawled back in here until 9am.

When I finally got out of bed for the day, I was wide awake and ready to get started on this…

…and this.

IMG_5046

It’s always good to have a few extra hours of sleep! 🙂

It’s a decent Spring day in Madison, so after lunch I was ready to get outside and go for a 4-mile walk.  On my way back from my walk, I stopped in the grocery store and bought a few staples.

IMG_5051

  • Nature’s Path Optimum Blueberry Cinnamon
  • Food for Life Brown Rice Tortillas
  • Smartwater
  • Oven Roasted Tofurky
  • Veggie Slices

IMG_5052

  • Chobani 0% Greek yogurt
  • Fage 0% Greek yogurt
  • Organic bananas
  • Organic pears
  • Organic carrots
  • Organic Raw Gingerade Kombucha

Later this afternoon, I worked on a group project for my Environmental Science class.  We had to site an imaginary landfill in Door County, following a specific criteria set by the State to pick out the ideal location, write a cover letter, and fill out a form for submitting our proposal.  In class, we have to do a presentation on our landfill site and why we chose it.  Of my 3 other group members, only one guy showed up, so we ended up doing the entire thing by ourselves. This really doesn’t bother me since I know that if I’m the one who does it, I’ll make sure I do a good job, but I still think it’s pretty rude for the other guys to just not show up.  Either way, we finished within an hour and it feels good to have it done! 🙂

Do you run into the group project problem of group members not showing or just not contributing?

Tonight’s agenda is just some studying and yoga… weekends are the best!

The Monday Morning Shopping Experience

After last weekend’s not-so-fun grocery shopping experience at Whole Foods, I decided to plan a Monday morning shopping trip instead this week.  Monday’s are the only morning I’m free during the week, so I figured why not see what it’s all about?

Wow, was Whole Foods ever different on Monday morning at 8:30am!!!  For one, the parking lot was nearly empty.  Normally I have to park like a mile from the entrance, but there were spots right up close and personal. Being me, I still parked a mile away, but it was awesome not to have to worry about getting run over. 😉

There were no bumping carts, getting hit with carts, or little kids running around.  In fact, it was almost quiet!  Love getting my shopping done in a stress-free environment!  Food was well-stocked, although I’ve never had much of a problem with this anyways at my Whole Foods.  And the employees were just as, if not more, friendly and happy to provide their services.

Overall, definitely a better experience than the weekends, and hopefully I can plan around doing more weekday shopping trips in the future!

So, the real question, what did I buy?

IMG_5023

  • Nature’s Path Crunchy Maple Sunrise
  • Nature’s Path Whole O’s
  • Vegn Complete Whole Food Health Optimizer (this is a new one for me!)
  • Doctor Kracker Seeded Spelt Flatbreads
  • Doctor Kracker Klassic 3-Seed Flatbreads
  • Almond Breeze unsweetened almond milk

IMG_5024

  • Organic sugar snap peas
  • Organic apples (red delicious, granny smith, and golden delicious)
  • Organic kiwis
  • Organic Ataulfo mangos
  • Organic heirloom tomato
  • Organic sweet potato
  • Organic carrots

IMG_5025

  • Eros Organic plain Greek yogurt
  • Fage 2% Greek yogurt
  • Organic Raw and Synergy (Botanic No 7, Trilogy, and Cosmic Cranberry)
  • Siggi’s Icelandic style plain yogurt
  • Stonyfield 0% fat plain yogurt

Stocked for at least another week!  🙂

Just Your Average April Snowstorm

Oh yes, the snow is coming down like crazy here in Wisconsin. Down jacket?  Check!  I’m hoping the snow won’t stick around since it’s above 30*F, but it’s still just breaks every law of nature to have snow in April… whatever happened to April showers bringing May flowers?

Even so, I guess snow just comes with the territory.  I’ll deal with it! 😉

This morning, I started out my day with a new cereal – Nature’s Path Optimum Banana Almond.

IMG_4986

Topped with unsweetened almond milk and an organic banana on the side.

IMG_4989

Fabulous cereal!  Crunchy, very lightly sweet, and perfectly dense.  My only complaint was that I would have like a little more dried fruit than was in the mix… no biggie though!

Later this morning I headed to the local grocery store to pick up a few staples:

IMG_4990

  • GTS Kombucha and Synergy
  • Organic spinach
  • Organic bananas
  • Smartwater

IMG_4991

  • Food for Life Millet Bread (Matt’s recommendation)
  • Kangaroo Whole Wheat with Honey Pita Pocket Bread
  • Athenos Black Olive Hummus
  • Sesmark Brown Rice Thins
  • Food for Life Brown Rice Tortillas

I went to a fabulous Power Yoga class this afternoon at the studio – it’s good to have alternative options for afternoon exercise when it’s a blizzard outside. ;)

On that same topic, thank you all for you sweet comments and compliments on my Yoga Playlist post!  I have so much fun putting my playlists together, and I’m happy I could share a couple of my favorites with everyone.  Be sure to check it out if you haven’t already!

Hope you are all enjoying your weekend and, as a side-note, don’t forget to “like” Health, Happiness, and Hope on it’s new Facebook Page
